These young ones can be eaten by a fish or a turtle in a second while f.e hawks attack from above and herons from the shore. That's probably why ducks often have more than a dozen babies as they know that most of them are going to be food as a lot of other animals rely on this source of food. It's the cruel way nature works. I wonder if ducks produce less offspring when they're living in a more safe environment like in a city park pond instead of near a big lake.

I don't think so. Have you seen how overpopulated ponds get when there's lots of food and a low predator count? There's teams of people that go out and have to apply birth control in geese populations, in some areas.  |

Pikes can be viscious creatures. In my country, many people have had to visit ER due to bitten by a pike. Ouch! |
