"Pics From a Chinese Gangsters Phone": Viral Imgur Album, March 2012
An Imgur album titled "Pics From a Chinese Gangsters Phone" went viral in March 2012, drawing more than 500,000 views within half a day. The photographs showed men in northern China posing with Porsche vehicles, stacks of Chinese currency, luxury goods, tattoos and a puppy. Several images showed a living young man being beaten or humiliated, including photographs of him kneeling against a wall, lying on the ground beneath another man's foot and posing with a bottle in his mouth. The album was presented as photographs recovered from a man's phone, but the uploader was not publicly identified and the claim that the phone had been found was never established. There was also no evidence connecting the apparent owner to organized crime.
