Wright Brothers' First Flight at Kill Devil Hills, December 17, 1903
Orville Wright made the Wright brothers' first powered, controlled and sustained flight at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903. The 1903 Wright Flyer traveled 120 feet in 12 seconds after taking off at about 10:35 a.m. Orville lay prone at the controls as the biplane flew a few feet above the sand. Wilbur Wright ran alongside the right wing after releasing it. Orville had positioned the camera before the attempt, and John T. Daniels squeezed the rubber bulb that tripped its shutter, producing the best-known photograph of the flight.

Pretty much like the fact that the automobile was invented by someone before ford...I believe it was some 100 years earlier but it was never pursued in the way ford did it http://www.ausbcomp.com/~bbott/cars/carhist.htm |
