Phoenix Trotting Park

Alongside Interstate 10 near Goodyear, Arizona, is the Phoenix Trotting Park. The gigantic, sandy colored grandstand has stood unused for more than 40 years.

Opened in 1965, the Phoenix Trotting Park was funded by James J. Dunnigan who believed harness racing would draw fans from Phoenix. Unfortunately the facility predated Interstate 10 by about two decades and access to the park was possible only by dirt roads, and even the parking lot was never paved. At about 20 miles from downtown Phoenix, the park's remote location was a major factor in the low rates of attendance. The facility closed permanently in December, 1966.

When you put all of this together along with Arizona's brutal 110º plus summers it’s clear to see why the track was doomed from the start.

Re: Phoenix Trotting Park

In 1998, the Park was selected to be used in the film “No Code of Conduct” starring Martin Sheen & Charlie Sheen. The location was selected to film an explosion film for the film's climax which ended up upset animal rights activists when the pyrotechnics incinerated large numbers of birds who inhabited the grandstands.

Re: Phoenix Trotting Park

As home of my Namesake, just wanted to thank you for posting this. Among the locals, there is ever farther reaching history and memories of the Park. Though closed off to the Public, access is easily gained, and if you are on the right side of the local Troopers for the day, you'll be allowed to remain and do your thing. This place, in person, is amazing. Oh to have the $ to restore this grand landmark - could be one amazing place today. Who says forward thinking always pays off, yet, it near always shows us how things could be.
Killer set - great shots! Rawk On!
