Paul Cole's Abbey Road Album Cover Claim, London, 1969
Paul Cole, an American tourist, said he was the bystander standing beside the black van on the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album cover. Photographer Iain Macmillan took six frames on Abbey Road in St John's Wood, London, during the summer of 1969, and the fifth was selected for the cover. The album was released on September 26, 1969. Cole said he had skipped a nearby museum visit with his wife and was talking with the police officer in the van when the Beatles crossed the street. He recalled thinking they were eccentrics and said he recognized himself on the album sleeve later. His identification rests on his own account and remains disputed, with other men also having claimed to be the bystander. Cole, a retired salesman and longtime resident of Barefoot Bay, Florida, died in Pensacola in 2008. He was later photographed holding the album while an inset highlighted the distant figure he said was him.
