Parched Koalas Seek Water in Adelaide Heatwave, January 2009
Two koalas sought water from people during a heatwave in the Adelaide area in late January 2009, when temperatures remained above 40C for four days. South Australian Parks and Wildlife spokesman John Dengate said the behavior was unusual and that heat-dried eucalyptus leaves were no longer providing the animals with enough moisture. Star, an orphaned young koala, came down from a garden tree onto a house verandah and sat in a white plastic bucket of water while drinking. She was later taken to an animal infirmary, with plans for her eventual release. In a separate encounter, a young koala nicknamed Lance stopped a group of cyclists on a road and drank water from their bottles. The nickname referred to cyclist Lance Armstrong, who was competing in the Tour Down Under at the time.
