Old Missouri State Pennetentiary and Gas Chamber
Open 1836-2004. Some of the WPA era and later building have already been demolished, some of the main cellblocks they're hoping to reuse and convert into a museum. In the meantime tours are offered. These are from a few years ago. The former assistant warden is the primary tour guide. The picture looking up at two building shows the view from the gas chamber, the clients were housed on the left. In the old days they would be hustled down the hill, later they were driven in a car. On the wall next to the gas chamber you see pictures of it's clients (the final picture on the lower right was the only post Furman execution. While testing the gas chamber they found it leaked, and patching the seals didn't work. They considered have Leuchter improve and rebuild it, but instead opted for death juice for future executions. The last two on the second row are the two most famous clients, Hall and Heady, who kidnapped Bobby Greenlease, son of one of the wealthiest men in Kansas city, and killed him before even writing the ransom note. They got caught while on a drunken binge in St. Louis including stops at the famous Coral Courts "No-Tell". Much of the ransom money was allegedly stolen by cops. They showed no mercy and asked for none in return, declining to appeal, and were gassed only 4 months after the crime. One of the pictures shows the mechanism. Cyanide salts were put into the hopper, pulling the red lever dumped it into the crock of acid (here with the cover on), producing cyanide gas. The easiest way to go would is to hold you breath until the gas reached a lethal concentration, the executioner would rap on the window to tell the inmate when it was time to breath. Gas chamber executions are still possible in Missouri in theory, and now that they don't have any death juice the topic has come up, but the gas chamber is still leaky and the prison is closed.
