Ohio State Reformatory AKA Shawshank
"The Ohio State Reformatory (OSR), also known as the Mansfield Reformatory, is a historic prison located in Mansfield, Ohio in the United States. It was built between 1886 and 1910 and remained in operation until a 1990" As well as being a fascinating building in itself, it also contains many of the props and set pieces used during the filming of the movie The Shawshank Redemption. Apparently it is open to the public. And unlike Alcatraz, you are free to explore as much as you like without guides stalking you. Although in a poor state of repair following closure in 1990 and despite some rejuvenation for filming purposes in 1993, the prison seems to have deteriorated further in recent years. I did visit Alcatraz in '81 and even 3 years after the movie it was not looking good - I wish you the best in revitalizing Ohio penitentiary |
