Noctiluca Red-Tide Bloom Closes Sydney Beaches, November 27, 2012
A red-tide bloom of Noctiluca scintillans appeared off Bondi in Sydney on November 27, 2012, turning coastal water pink, red and orange. Bondi and Clovelly beaches closed first, followed by Gordons Bay, Bronte, Tamarama and several northern beaches as the bloom spread through November 29. The NSW government water office identified the single-celled plankton from samples collected at Bondi. The bloom was not toxic, although officials warned that it could irritate the skin and eyes, produce a fishy odor and contain enough ammonia to cause minor irritation. Fishers were advised not to eat anything caught in affected water. An upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water was cited as the cause. Along the shoreline, the colored sea contrasted sharply with turquoise ocean pools, where some swimmers remained in the water while beachgoers watched and photographed the bloom.
