Nile Crocodile Attacks Elephant's Trunk in Zambia, 2010; All Survive
In late September 2010, a Nile crocodile lunged from a water hole and clamped onto the trunk of a mother elephant in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. Her calf was standing beside her as she backed away from the water with the crocodile still hanging from her trunk. The calf stumbled over the crocodile during the struggle. The reptile then released the mother and returned to the water, while both elephants ran away. Photographer Martin Nyfeler said the encounter lasted about 15 seconds and that all three animals survived. The animal was a Nile crocodile, not an alligator. Zoo experts said elephants are highly unusual prey for crocodiles and suggested the attack may have been a mistake or an act of desperation. |
