A dashboard camera inside a police car captured this stunning bolt of lightning hitting the ground, just metres away from his vehicle.

The amazing footage was recorded by a police officer in Mississippi while out on a routine patrol.

Officer Mark Rodriguez from the city of Gautier in Jackson County spotted the natural phenomenon.

His shows clouds gathering on the horizon as the officer drives along the highway, but no obvious signs of a dramatic storm up ahead.

Seconds later the bright white lightning bolt rips through the sky, and hits the ground with a series of yellow flashes.
