Residents of Bulgarian city of Varna at first suspected animal cruelty but the real answer turned out to be something more strange.

An extraordinary sight has been causing uproar in the Bulgarian seaside resort of Varna - a mysterious green cat prowling the streets.
Could it have been the victim of a cruel prank? Or a new breed, born nears some radioactive plant?
Photographed failing miserably to blend in with the background in the Black Sea city, the emerald feline was presumed to have been painted in a cruel vandalism attack.

A Facebook group even emerged, calling for the perpetrator to be brought to justice.
But it has been revealed by local media the cat developed its fetching green coat because it usually sleeps on an abandoned heap of synthetic green paint in a garage.This theory has been backed up by the fact the multicolored cat is getting greener by the day.

The RSPCA has warned that painting animals for cosmetic reasons could have "potentially fatal consequences".
