Nazis were terrible, but they aren't the only jackasses to ever have existed. You can't blame all the world evil on the Nazi's. Evil was around way before they were and will still be lurking long after they've been forgotten. If forgetting nazis is actually possible, that is.
We are all capable of doing evil, as well as good. None of us are exempt from behaving like jerks, from time to time.

Narrator: „It’s hard to believe that this place once was a place of horror: The old hunting lodge of Count Tisser in Northwest Romania. Still pediatrist Oarcea checks if everything is okay. They are “his” children after all: These Children of Cighid that become grown-ups.

Narrator: Cighid 1990: When reporters of the SPIEGEL-Magazine arrive here, they discover the night of civilization. More than 100 children ail to death. Many of them are locked up in dark dungeons, left alone, naked in the cold, malnourished and neglected. They’re kept like animals. Many of them cannot speak or walk because nobody cares for them.

Narrator: Cighid today: The children play where once was a dead silence. There are 54 nurses caring for 56 mentally retarded, it’s like a miracle. The help was coordinated by Frankfurt’s pastor Karl-Heinz Pelikan. For the children a new life began back then.

Pelikan: Angela Fechete, known from the first SPIEGEL-report, was locked up together with Maria Deutsch in a cage the whole day and at night they gave her strong ataractics. She was removed from the cage only for this.

Narrator: Angela spent the first years og her life in this kennel. She was locked up and fed with a greasy stodge two times a day because she was presumed to be aggressive.
Oarcea: I remember, that in the first two years, I never heard her cry. I’m podiatrist and I expect children to cry once in a while. A child has to express his feelings. These children didn’t know how to cry.

Narrator: Today, Angela shares her room with three others. The presumed aggressive girl is reckoned exceptionally social.

Narrator: The bodies were buried on a nearby field. 122 children died in only 2 years. Nowadays, proper gravestones remind the dead.

Narrator: In 1990, Tiberius seems to have no will to live. The 7yo has the physics of a 3yo and declines food. The cynical original comment of a back-then nurse:
Nurse Gyöngy: They should have been killed right after birth. Then it would not have come to this. We didn’t have another choice but letting them die. If we’ve only had central heating!

Narrator: Tiberius Vager was brought back to life very gently. He experienced human warmth for the first time in his life.

Oarcea: I’ve met Tiberius Vager in 1990. He was in extraordinarily bad health. But he made a very fast progress and even his communication with us got better. He just had developed a very strong will to live. Nobody would have expected this from him.

Narrator: Doctors and nurses cared for Tiberius and gradually, the moribund became a child full of life and energy. Tiberius started to eat and even walk. He laughed and tried to communicate. But later his form got worse again.
Oarcea: I hoped that he would be better an better but unfortunately this was not the case. Suddenly he lost is eyesight and then withdrew more and more.
Narrator: After all, Tiberius was 26 when he died. After the first media reports there was a huge wave of helpfulness flooding Cighid. At first, emergency doctors cared for the children. But soon it was obvious, that sole medicinal help was not enough. The children would have to learn in a very short time what was natural for kids of their age. Psychologist Mirela Saupe helped them to achieve this.

Saupe: Our task was to prepare the children for the grown-up world. We were a team of psychologists, social workers, speech therapist and nurses. Practically, we had to start from scratch. We had to teach them not to cross a red traffic-light, how to go shopping and generally human relationships. All these things that they did not learn behind the walls of Cighid.

Narrator: They made it with their will to live: The children of Cighid are grown-ups now. Many of them have their own live, have found a job and a partner. For example: Sarmanca Fechete. She is 25 years old, lives together with her boyfriend and wants to marry soon. She still meets the other survivors of Cighid regularly.

Narrator: Sarmanca 1990. The girl would probably not have survived any longer in this horror-castle. She is malnourished, can neither walk nor speak. After the liberation, Sarmanca made a fast progress. Only the bad dreams remained…

Sarmanca Fechete: I often dream of Cighid. I have nightmares. I get frightened and wake up. Then I ask my husband “What happened? Where am I?” I’ve recently dreamt I was in a dungeon like in Cighid, in the “isolator”. We were naked and were beaten. I often see these pictures before my eyes, how they beat us. My husband has to calm down me then.

Narrator: It’s pictures like these that won’t leave alone the children. The “isolator” 21 years ago. He also coined Sarmaca – until today.
[Sarmanca]
Sarmanca: I would have loved to have a child. I wanted to see how it is to be loved by somebody. To live for somebody. But I’ve lost my child during pregnancy. I wanted to tell my mom: “Look, I keep the child! I won’t do, what you did You put me into this place and left me alone” I wish it so very much: Only one child!

Narrator: Even if they stand on their own feet now, the Children of Cighid will stay together.
