Metal Storm 36-Barrel Prototype: Claimed 180-Round Million-RPM Burst
Metal Storm Ltd., an Australian weapons developer, unveiled its 36-barrel stacked-projectile prototype in June 1997. The electrically fired system stored multiple projectiles nose-to-tail in each barrel and had no conventional cartridge cases or moving firing mechanism. The promotional range demonstration showed the prototype firing at stated rates of 600 and 60,000 rounds per minute before discharging 180 rounds in about 0.01 seconds. Metal Storm presented the final test as equivalent to more than 1 million rounds per minute. That figure was an extrapolated burst rate across all 36 barrels, not a sustained cyclic rate. The demonstration also showed smoke surrounding the box-shaped launcher and extensive damage to plywood target panels. The system remained a proof of concept and was never fielded. Metal Storm collapsed in 2012, and its intellectual property was later acquired by DefendTex. |

I think that's a part of the Metal Storm project. Caseless, electronically fired rounds. They have a handgun prototype if I remember correctly.

I see it as "puff the magic dragons" little nephew in his infant stage (if that doesnt show my age nothing does)... Hit every inch in a grid and you will detonate any potential mines or IEDs, more RPM the lower and faster you can clear an area, its raining lead... If someone was to integrate a GIS program, with GPS integration into this weapon, and give it access to known data ( "delivery vehicle" speed combined with air drag vs velocity and past targeting) and you have one scary machine. |

Actually it becomes a psychological weapon at that point much like the B-52... which, incredibly, is still in service and will be until like 2047. You may only need one round to take a person down, but you can hide from a single bullet, you can't hide from a million very easily.

Re: Metal Storm 36-Barrel Prototype: Claimed 180-Round Million-RPM Burst
How about when it's in use as an anti-missile system? Or maybe mounted to the bottom of an aircraft peppering the shit out of a battlefield? Do you think the AC-130 is pointless? Any of our bombers? Chainguns? Machine guns? All are the same idea, this gun has few if any moving parts because it's electronic so it's actually more reliable.
