Mechanical Graveyards: Aircraft, Ships, Trains, Anchors and Phone Boxes
The collection covers abandoned aircraft, ships, locomotives, military vehicles, submarines, fishing boats, telephone boxes and taxis at sites around the world. Three scenes show the train cemetery outside Uyuni, Bolivia, where retired steam locomotives stand on the salt flats. Two others show the Cemitério das Âncoras at Praia do Barril in Tavira, Portugal. Its rows of anchors remain from a tuna fishery founded in 1841 and abandoned in the 1960s. Other scenes include B-52 bombers and transport aircraft stored in desert rows, rusting ships on a barren coast, Soviet Tu-22M bombers on an overgrown airfield and fishing boats stranded by the retreat of the Aral Sea. A field in Chongqing, China, held hundreds of abandoned yellow taxis on March 4, 2009. The remaining groups include rusting armoured vehicles, diesel submarines and British red K6 telephone boxes stored in a yard. |
