Maybe the Most Polluted Place on the Planet (not New Joisey)
Karabash is a town in the Chelyabinsk region with 15 000 citizens. It was founded when people found gold deposits there in 1822. In the beginning of the 20th century copper started to be extracted as well. After decades of the extraction of copper ore and metal smelting the town became the area of ecological emergency. Initially there were no treatment facilities – in the USSR no one cared about ecology. Every year the plant throws out about 180 tons of gasses, which fall in the form of the acid rain around the adjacent territories. This mountain has lost all the trees. Here, the copper smeltery responsible for the ecological disaster. In the nearby river the concentration of iron 500 times exceeds the normal rate. There are no plants at the distance of 100 meters from the banks. The ecological situation has been improved lately. Treatment facilities are being built, however, the state of affairs cannot be called at least “normal” so far. Pit refuse heaps reach the height of more than 50 meters. With the constant fall of acid rains all the vegetation dies, the windy rains quickly washes away the soil. Mountains turn into rocks. The local citizens suffer from a mass of acquired diseases: cancerous tumors, eczema, kidney stone, dementia, intrauterine development defects, cerebral paralysis. In end of 1989 the work of the plant was suspended due to the deteriorating ecological situation. One fifth of the local population lost their jobs and the town entered the period of crisis. In 1998 the production cycle has been launched again on account of the escalation of the socioeconomic situation. |

Re: Maybe the Most Polluted Place on the Planet (not New Joisey)
Yeah, I've seen worst than this. There's a chrome plant in Albania that has turned the entire valley black, I've seen it myself. Nothing compared to the 9 of the 10 most polluted cities in the world which all happen to be in China. Yes, communism still is shit. |
