Housemate charged in torture, assault of 61-year-old man
A 61-year-old man told police he endured more than four hours of torture from a housemate who continually shocked him with a stun gun, slapped him with a fixed-blade knife, poured lacquer thinner over his head and threatened to set him on fire.

The housemate, 38-year-old Corey Allen Bush, has been charged with kidnapping, assault on an at-risk adult and felony menacing, according to Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the Denver district attorney's office.

According to an arrest affidavit, the victim shared a home in the 1200 block of East 34th Street with Bush — the victim lived upstairs, Bush downstairs.

On July 25, Bush went upstairs and asked the victim for money so he could buy beer. When the man told Bush he didn't have beer money, the victim told investigators, Bush went berserk, spending more than an hour kicking and beating the victim, who was bound to a chair.

After an hour, the victim said Bush got keys to padlocks in the home, used the padlocks to secure the residence, turned off the exterior lights to the home and escalated the torture.

Over the next 3 1/2 hours, the victim told officials, Bush poured lacquer thinner over his head and told the victim he was going to set him on fire.

Bush allegedly first waved a lighter near the victim, then lighted a roofing torch and waved the flame close to the victim.

The housemate told police he was sure Bush was going to kill him. After that, Bush allegedly slapped the victim with a fixed-blade knife, telling him he was going to cut him up and feed him to his dog.

After slapping him with the knife, the housemate said, Bush resumed the beating, striking the victim on the head and body and finally knocking him to the ground. At that point, said the victim, he was continually shocked with a stun gun.

When a third housemate arrived, he heard the victim screaming and crying. The third housemate was able to break into the home and went to the second floor, where he found Bush standing above the victim, the fixed-blade knife in his hand.

According to the arrest affidavit, the third housemate was able to knock the knife away from Bush, who then fled the home.

Kimbrough said charges against Bush were filed July 30. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 24.

According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Bush has previously been arrested for assaults, sex assault, failure to register as a sex offender, driving under the influence, hit-and-run and extortion.
