he was grabbing the fishing line so if the line snapped, the gear wouldnt fly into the fisherman's face... they use large sinkers for deep sea fishing and if the line snaps below the sinker, the bent rod can slingshot the sinker into your face. i was a deckhand for awhile....i've seen the line snap right as the fish was brought up (usually happens when an inexperienced fisherman pulls the fish outta the water with their pole) and the sinker shot back, barely missed the fisherman and busted out a window on the boat.  |
