Lost at Sea Ship Found

The MV Princess Ashika was an inter-island ferry which operated in Tonga. The vessel, built in 1972, began sailing the Tongan route on 7 July 2009 only to sink less than a month later on 5 August. The number of people on board the ferry at the time of its sinking has not been confirmed: initial reports said there were 75 people on board, but this was updated to 79. The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) stated there were a total of 86 on board, of which 53 survivors had been rescued, and The Times newspaper gave a figure of over 100 passengers. On 7 August, authorities believed there were 119 people aboard, with two bodies found and 64 people missing. The estimate of the number of passengers aboard was raised on 8 August to 141, on 9 August to 148, and subsequently to 149.
Tonga's transportation minister, Paul Karalus, resigned six days after the tragedy.

Re: Lost at Sea Ship Found

I love sunken shis as well. It seems that the Tongan Gov.t pressured the captain to go to sea to go to sea without necessary repairs, despite it was obviously unseaworthy. Then the Gov.t blamed NZ ferries for the disaster
NZ ferry accused 'trying to get out of Tonga'
A New Zealand businessman accused of manslaughter following the sinking of the Princess Ashika ferry with the loss of more than 74 lives in Tongan waters last August is reportedly trying to leave the island kingdom.

John Jonesse, the former chief executive of Shipping Corporation of Polynesia who advised Tonga authorities to buy the vessel, "has booked himself on a flight out of Tonga," the ABC said today.

A magistrate ruled that Mr Jonesse should be given back his passport, but the Tongan attorney-general refused to return it and has appealed to the Tongan Supreme Court.

On Monday, Mr Jonesse was taken into custody after failing to appear in court on a charge of manslaughter, but as he was being taken from his home in Nuku'alofa by police, he told journalists that there had been a misunderstanding.

Police laid the charge of manslaughter against Mr Jonesse, formerly a Christchurch businessman, separate to the royal commission of inquiry into the sinking of the inter-island ferry. The commission today handed its findings to King George Tupou V, the Speaker and the Prime Minister.

The Tongan public is still awaiting the release of the inquiry report - and its translation into Tongan - but some journalists have obtained copies.

Radio New Zealand International reported that though the two key terms of reference were to identify criminal and/or civil liability in relations to the sinking, the commissioners have been careful not to incriminate anybody.

"Obviously they have considered what counsels' representing parties to the commission had to say about the wording of the report, but in the report they say the Government had systemically failed in all areas relating to the buying of the Ashika," said the radio network's correspondent, Mateni Tapueluelu.

The report also said Mr Jonesse did not do enough homework in gathering information for the Government to decide whether or not to buy the Princess Ashika, Tapueluelu reported.

The final report follows five months of investigations with the commission hearing repeatedly that the unseaworthy vessel's purchase was marked by a lack of process, an absence of due diligence and the use of forged documents.

Mr Johnesse is one of three individuals and the Shipping Corporation charged with manslaughter in relation to the death of one ferry passengers.

Before the operation which returned the photo (which is actually a screen-capture of a video, see below) in the OP, Navy REMUS returned a Sonar Image Of Princess Ashika: here is it.

The image shows the REMUS image of PRINCESS ASHIKA on the seabed. Note the similarity to the surface picture including bow section with ramp, bridge area and passenger compartment. The large balls in the picture are very large rock spheres. Depth is 110 metres.

The pic in the OP is part of a set of selected clips from the video released to the media:
"The video is in the possession of the Tonga Police inquiry team and will be made available in full to the Royal Commission of Inquiry. We have made a decision to release selected clips from the video to the media for release to the public. I emphasise the clips are selective and do not represent the whole video content which will be subject to release provisions in other forums.

Latest news:
Tonga government announces it will bring in independent prosecutor for Princess Ashika cases
27 June, 2010 UTC

The Tongan government is about to confirm it will bring in an independent prosecutor to assist with prosecutions arising from the Princess Ashika disaster.

A number of people are awaiting trial following last August’s sinking which claimed 74 lives.

The former Attorney General, John Cauchi, had sought the prosecutors, Grant Burston of New Zealand and Dan Howard of Australia, before his resignation in April.

One reason he gave for suddenly leaving his post was the government’s lack of support for retaining the prosecutors.

The government’s maintained it was a budgetting issue and now, with the new estimates being finalised, the Prime Minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, says there’s a commitment to bring at least one of them in.

“I would certainly say that we would start with one of them and see what was needed, but that is something for the law people, Crown Law people to decide on.”
Dr Feleti Sevele says Parliament is holding off discussing the report into the sinking until the criminal cases are heard.
