Lligwy Burial Chamber

Lligwy Burial Chamber is to be found in a field close to the small town of Moelfre on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales. The most striking feature of the burial chamber is the massive capstone, estimated to weigh some 25 tonnes.

Lligwy is a neolithic burial chamber probably constructed before 3000 B.C. It was excavated in the early 20th Century and found to contain bones from up to 30 men, women and children. The illustration below suggests that the capstone was probably dragged over the support stones by brute force.
It is possible to enter the tomb but it is rather cramped for height!

There are many ancient sites on the Isle of Anglesey including prehistoric burial chambers but I would definitely recommend anyone visiting the east coast of Anglesey to find time to search out Lligwy. Lligwy is a fantastic burial chamber ...if you like ancient burial chambers!

Re: Lligwy Burial Chamber

there seem to be a fair few of these where the rocks have stayed where they were placed but all the dirt that was put over the rocks to make them a burial mound has been shifted by the weather

Re: Lligwy Burial Chamber

I actually live on Holy Island...which is an island attached to Ynys Mon (Welsh for Isle Of Anglesey) by a causeway and a small bridge. And I have never ever been there, but I have read about it and have seen pictures of it...
