A Little Humming Visitor

How fun!

That's quite a large hummingbird. Even without the long tail and wings, it's larger than the ones around my area.

They do get pretty bold and demanding. They come and yell at you at the window, if the feeder goes empty.

I've heard this before, I had some at the nursery I was working at come and buzz in front of me wondering if I'd feed them. There were, however, thousands of flowers for them to feed on.

As a rule of thumb for the hummers I think the further you go into the subtropics and tropics the larger the birds get... Don't quote me on that though, I just googled a list of the hummers that visit brazil and quite a few are larger than the little peeps I get here in BC.

Re: A Little Humming Visitor

I grew up with hummingbirds buzzing the house every summer. One got knocked out and I was able to gently hold it and feed it by hand. That's when I learned that they have forked tongues.

Re: A Little Humming Visitor

Oh wow. When I lived in Virginia, USA I was sitting on the deck, sunbathing and almost asleep when I heard a buzzing sound right by my face. I thought it was a bee or something but didn't want to swat it away. I opened my eyes and it was a humming bird just buzzing by my face. It was gorgeous and made my day being so close to that.

Yeah, but don't you guys have Hedgehogs? I've always wanted to have wild hedgehogs around. So cute.

When I was a kid you'd see dozens of hedgehogs, they were around in all the grassy woodland etc. Had loads in our garden. So common we didn't think anything of them. Now you barely see them. I have been back in England for 4 years and haven't seen one single hedgehog. Sad. I do see lots of urban foxes though, going into people's gardens, walking along the streets, or just sleeping in people's gardens!!

Awesome stuff. The only thing we get buzzed by here in Australia are the bloody magpies
