The condemned was to lay on a peice of wooden board, the executioner then cut through the victims back and sliced downward, then the skin would be peeled open and the ribcage would be torn back to give the victim a representation of bird wings. It was often used as a sacrifice to the god odin. Although there was no psychical evidence of this ever found from skeletal remains in norse archeological sites it has been disputed as a myth.
