Re: List of Botched Executions
I know I have mentioned this elsewhere on this site: set up a panel of judges (odd number so no ties) who only are responsible to evaluate death penalty cases. Give the accused/convicted 5 years to provide evidence contrary to the conviction, and no more than 3 appeals. If the panel has not overturned the conviction on the 1st day of the 5th year, it's a date with destiny. I have a problem with lulling the convicted into the execution; as so many others have stated, the victims were killed, and in some cases, horribly tortured and killed. The punishment should fit the crime, minute for minute. And, Russia, China, the US (Nuremburg trials), and the Philippines have used the gunshot effectively. Russia put the convicted in a cage of limited movement, and fired a single 9mm round into the head with excellent efficiency. We've seen the Chinese use the single rifle bullet efficiently (until the recent portable death vans of recent). Even the US was effective as a firing squad, including the recent execution of Ronnie Lee Gardener. For whatever reason, the execution has to be serene and painless, but it is still execution. Let's get over the ACLU requirement of painless, and streamline the system to be quick and effective (as I've detailed above), and I really don't give a f*** if the convicted suffers. Now, insofar as murder/suicide, they are typically an emotional/passionate state, and one cannot expect to apply logic during that time. So, I do not see capital punishment as a deterrent, but rather a necessary evil to remove a non-productive element from society as quickly as possible. As for the wrongly convicted, if I was wrongly convicted, I'd rather have my sentence applied to me knowing that for the bulk of capital punishments, the conviction was correct, and I was the "stray flyer" that got caught in a trap, but I'd still believe in the system as a whole (and I'd chose firing squad).
