The 67-year-old man mauled by a huge male lion in South Africa is the wildlife park's British owner, it has been revealed.

Mike Hodge was rushed to hospital with injuries to the neck and jaw following the shocking incident caught on film.

Pictures shows Mr Hodge smiling in his hospital bed despite his injuries, with a friend telling The Sun that he is recovering from the dramatic ordeal.

The video of the attack, filmed at the Marakele Predator Park in South Africa, shows Mr Hodge entering the lion's enclosure.

'Mike and one of his rangers were a little concerned about a smell in a compound that was upsetting one of the lions and had gone in through the gate to see what was causing it,' the friend told.

'He is no fool around lions and knows how to interact with them but clearly something went wrong'.

Witnesses watch in horror as the animal pursues him towards the metal door to the pen - at the park believed to be nine kilometers from Thabazimbi.

Onlookers scream as he is dragged back by the beast. The hulking animal claws at the man - who goes limp in its grip.

The lion drags the man farther into the enclosure, into some bushes and onlookers scream for help.

Their current site has over a dozen big cat, including white lions, cheetahs and two Bengal tigers.

Guests can stay in safari tents and each night they 'will be able to hear the lions roar, hyenas laugh, and jackals calling'.

Tents are furnished with double or single beds, and each one has an en-suite bathroom with a shower, the website reads.

That man must have known not to run. I don't get it. The way the article is written, the guy knows lions. Why the fuck did he turn his back? You NEVER turn your back to a lion. Never mind run!? What the hell?

I was on a farm and they had a beautiful lioness. Raised as a cub.

I entered 'Queenie's' enclosure and this lioness did not like me one little bit. Her trainer 'Isaak' grabbed me and put me right up behind him.... while holding my hand he whispered 'dont turn around, walk back to the gate slowly going backwards.' His other hand had a long thick stick...and Queenie was going from left to right, pacing in front of us, with Isaak turning with her from left to right... following her gaze with his body. She was desperately wanting me for lunch.

I got out eventually. The gate to escape was as only about 3 metres away but it seemed like it took forever to get there.

Isaak and the family I was visiting were horrified at Queenies reaction to me. It perplexed them. I was just a shaking snivelling mess when I got out that enclosure.. I put it down to just being a total stranger and having really long hair maybe.

Later that night we heard her 'calling.' It was very unusual for her apparently, ... God...... she made such a fuss that night I stayed on the farm. 'Yeowling' all night.

Who knows what the problem was. Maybe I was menstrating at the time, I can't remember. Maybe she was jealous that I was walking with her 'family' maybe she sensed my fear, (because I was terrified) I'll never know.

I have such a keen respect for all wild animals. No matter how 'tame' you think an animal is, NEVER let your guard down.

ALWAYS give them the respect they deserve and keep your distance, be quiet and lower your gaze, especially to Lions! (and Elephants, Rhino and Buffalo)
