Lightning Strikes a Mini-van That a Family Were Unloading

A Sabine County family was stunned, but escaped injury over the weekend after lightning struck a mini-van that they were unloading, and also hit the slab of their home.

Meanwhile, the incident was captured on video by the family’s home security system.

It happened on Saturday afternoon at the Tim & Kayla Powell residence in the Pineland area as powerful thunderstorms were crossing the region.

The video shows Kayla Powell in the back of their van handing items to Tim Powell, while their toddler child and their small dog stand under the carport a few feet away.

Suddenly, there’s a flash of bright white light.
Instantaneously, Tim Powell falls to the ground and appears to be stunned, as the child covers his ears and runs toward his parents and also falls to the ground, and the family’s small dog darts out of camera view and runs inside the house.

Kayla Powell, who was in the back of the van handing out items to her husband, also appeared to be stunned as she climbed out and checked on her husband while ushering the child into the house.

The couple later discovered that the lightning bolt completely fried the electrical system in their van, which was apparent because the video showed every light in and on the van lit up instantly, and stayed on.

The lightning strike also broke an approximately one-foot section of the concrete slab under their carport.

Kayla Powell later said "I'm just glad our two boys were not affected by it", and she added that she and her husband are fine.

Powell said "We went to the hospital after it happened and there were no injuries, all thanks to God".
