Les Horribles Cernettes: Reported First Web Photo, CERN, July 18, 1992
Silvano de Gennaro photographed Les Horribles Cernettes at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, on July 18, 1992. The comedy doo-wop band, formed by CERN staff and partners of CERN scientists, appeared in early-1960s-style dresses and long gloves. De Gennaro, a CERN computer scientist and the band's manager, edited the photograph in Photoshop as an album-cover image, placing the four women against a cyan-to-white background with the band's name above them. A few weeks later, World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee asked de Gennaro for an image to test the Web's new features. The resulting GIF was placed on info.cern.ch. Claims for its historical status vary. It has been listed as the first photograph posted to the World Wide Web, while CERN has described it more narrowly as the first Web photograph published for entertainment rather than scientific work.
