Lennart Nilsson's "Foetus 18 Weeks": LIFE Cover Photograph, 1965
Swedish photographer Lennart Nilsson's "Foetus 18 Weeks" appeared on the cover of LIFE's April 30, 1965, issue for its "Drama of Life Before Birth" photo essay. The color photograph shows a fetus inside a translucent amniotic sac, with the umbilical cord extending toward the placenta against a dark, speckled background. The issue sold about 8 million copies and was reported as the magazine's fastest-selling issue. The essay included what has been described as the first published photograph of a living fetus inside the womb, made with an endoscope or laparoscope, although that description does not apply specifically to the cover image. Most of the other subjects were not living when photographed. Accounts differ over whether they had been surgically removed for medical reasons or had been miscarried or aborted. The photographs were later widely used by anti-abortion campaigners.

![]() This was one of the last pictures I got to see before giving birth and becoming a mommy for the first time last year... the likeness is stunning. My baby in my belly all snuggled up cozy and smiling... *sniffle :D In keeping with the forum topic------ it's pretty amazing what a mommy can see/know about her bairn before birth. My doctor even had his weight calculated to within a pound. Pregnancy is amazing with all the latest technology.

I'm not so sure I'd want a 3D ultrasound. Kinda like peeking before you get to open your presents on Christmas morning. It is kinda neat to know how cute your kid's going to be before you get to meet them.
