Large Pirarucu (Arapaima) Held by Two Men in Shallow Water
The pirarucu, also known in English as the arapaima, is a large, air-breathing freshwater fish native to the Amazon and Essequibo basins. Two men kneel in shallow, murky water while holding a large specimen by its body and head. Its rear body and tail curve upward, exposing large scales with red edging. Arapaima have an enlarged swim bladder lined with lung-like tissue and must surface regularly to breathe. Adults are typically about 2 meters long, while exceptional specimens can exceed 2.6 meters and weigh more than 100 kilograms. The longest verified specimen measured 3.07 meters, and the recorded maximum weight is 200 kilograms.
