Alfred Eisenstaedt's V-J Day in Times Square, August 14, 1945

On August 14, 1945, photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt captured a sailor kissing a woman in a white uniform in Times Square as crowds celebrated the announcement of Japan's surrender. The photograph became known as "V-J Day in Times Square." U.S. Navy photographer Victor Jorgensen photographed the same kiss from another angle.

Sailor George Mendonsa and Greta Zimmer Friedman became the most widely accepted identities of the couple, but the identification was never settled. By 1980, 11 men and three women had claimed to be the people pictured. Glenn McDuffie later claimed to be the sailor, while Edith Shain, who was a nurse, claimed to be the woman. Friedman was an Austrian Jewish refugee who worked as a dental assistant, not a nurse. In a 2005 oral history, she said the kiss was not her choice and was not romantic.

The Dept. of the Navy briefly used The Village People's "In The Navy" in TV ads. They pulled the ads after someone explained what the song, and the group, is about.
