Kennedy Park Memphis Tn

Back behind the football & baseball fields that are still in use, there is a closed gate & a sign barring entrance to a forgotten area of the park. Sitting alongside Wolf River, apparently a flood zone, an entire older park lays forgotten. A boat ramp, a playground area, picnic tables, and a pavillion complete with rusty grill. A scenic 1 mile nature trail circles a pond that has long since been drained, the trail itself overgrown with privet hedges & thornbushes. Another nature trail thru the woods leads to a broken bridge leading nowhere. Only the center of the bridge still stands, both the entrance & the exit long since collapsed into the water of the Wolf River. At the foot of the derelict bridge, huge swirls of fish left uncaught for a decade. Yet, there is something magical about this forgotten place. Miles of woodland nestled inside of a bustling city, flush with wildlife. Deer tracks, coyote scat, raccoon pawprints along the sandy riverbank. A tiny oasis where nature is slowly reclaiming a place of its own.

Re: Kennedy Park Memphis Tn

Thanks for this post. I was in Dallas 3 years ago and the event of JFK's assassination took hold of me in a way I couldn't have expected. I did a quick google search on the park just now but didn't see any reason as to why this park was closed. Is there a reason that you know of?

Possibly a flood or budget cuts, no one seems to know. I met a lone biker there my 1st walk that said on the google map it did not even say it was closed. It sits behind the active part of the park alone and forgotten.

A forgotten park has an air of sadness about it.

Re: Kennedy Park Memphis Tn

I hope I don't get in trouble for trespassing. I really like this place. I started clearing some of the brush off of the old trail, picked up garbage, ect. Been letting my dogs run free.

Re: Kennedy Park Memphis Tn

That's so weird, it looks like if the brush was cut back it would be a pretty decent place.

Re: Kennedy Park Memphis Tn

Where I live we had a similar situation, in my city, they let the whole thing go to pot and vandals and eventually mother nature took care of the rest. I can still find the location and odd scraps here and there, but otherwise it is gone.Very sad.
