Judge Dredd Weapons: US Army XM25 Airburst Launcher Set for 2009 Trials
In May 2009, the US Army was preparing the XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System for summer field trials. The developmental weapon was a semi-automatic, shoulder-fired 25mm airburst grenade launcher with a five-round magazine and a weight of about 14 pounds. Its laser rangefinder measured the distance to a target, while the fire-control system programmed the round to explode at a selected point over or behind cover. The Army listed a maximum effective range of 750 meters. The weapon did not fire around corners, but its airburst ammunition was intended to reach troops sheltering behind walls, in trenches or in similar positions. The "Judge Dredd" label was a press nickname referring to the 1995 film. An Army publicity photograph showed a soldier in camouflage shouldering an XM25 prototype fitted with its large top-mounted fire-control unit. Prototypes were later assessed in Afghanistan, but the program was eventually canceled. ![]() |

That one Swedish arms company is also developing a nice delayed air burst shoulder launched round. It's so cool, it will penetrate hardened concrete and then decimate anything inside... and including the facility.
