John Pugh's Trompe-l'Oeil Murals: Mana Nalu, Siete Punto Uno and Academe
John Pugh is an American muralist known for large trompe-l'oeil works that create the illusion of depth and architectural openings. Three of his murals are represented. Mana Nalu, completed in Honolulu in 2008, turns a multistory facade into a giant breaking wave. The painting includes a portrait of Queen Lili'uokalani inside the wave, a surfer on its face and children on a balcony below. Curved aqua glass blocks and overhead lighting contribute to the illusion. Siete Punto Uno, completed in Los Gatos, California, in 1989, depicts an Egyptian-style scene behind an apparently cracked wall, including a painted woman. Academe covers Taylor Hall at California State University, Chico, with another architectural illusion. |
