Jason Oglesbee Iowa Crane Rescue in Des Moines, June 30, 2009
Alan Neely, 62, drowned and his wife, Patricia Ralph-Neely, 67, was rescued after their boat went over the low-head Center Street Dam on the Des Moines River in downtown Des Moines on June 30, 2009. The couple had been scouting a place to watch July 4 fireworks when the boat was swept over the dam. Ralph-Neely became trapped in the turbulent water below the dam. Accounts put her time in the water at 25 to 40 minutes, while Des Moines Fire Department boats were unable to reach her. A Cramer & Associates crew working on a pedestrian bridge upstream used its construction crane to assist. Crane operator Joe Lowe lowered laborer Jason Oglesbee in a harness over the water. Oglesbee secured Ralph-Neely and held her as the crane moved them toward a fire department boat. Images captured Oglesbee suspended above the white water, reaching Ralph-Neely and holding her against the crane chains before rescuers pulled her into a red inflatable boat. She was released from Mercy Medical Center two days later.
