On 8Jan25, during the Puthiyangadi 'Nercha' festival in Malappuram, India, an elephant struck out at the humans, injuring at least 17 people. The elephant charged the crowd, lifted a person with its trunk and threw him into the crowd, causing serious injuries. After nearly two hours of effort, the mahout managed to calm the elephant.

The injured person is reported to be in critical condition and is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kottakkal. During the chaos, several people fell and were injured in the stampede.
