An international team, with the participation of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), identified between 129 and 221 new frog species in Madagascar, which nearly doubles the present fauna of amphibians of which he was known on the island. Among these new species, most of them were found in the two most popular parks and studied on the island, Ranomafana and Mantadia / Analamazaotra, where respectively 31 and identified 10 new species.
These new species are distributed throughout the island, not only in remote and little explored, and are largely genetically highly divergent for species already known. 23% of species were not detected in protected areas, and many of these species are clearly in danger of extinction because of habitat destruction. Indeed, amphibians are disappearing worldwide, mainly due to the destruction of natural habitats, emerging diseases such as chytridiomycosis, or climate change.
