Iain Macmillan's Beatles Abbey Road Album Cover, London, August 8, 1969

Iain Macmillan photographed the Beatles on the zebra crossing outside EMI Studios on Abbey Road in St John's Wood, London, at about 11:35 a.m. on August 8, 1969. Macmillan stood on a stepladder while a police officer briefly stopped traffic. He had about 10 minutes and took six frames, with the band walking three times in each direction.

The selected image shows John Lennon leading in a white suit, followed by Ringo Starr in black, Paul McCartney barefoot in a dark suit and George Harrison in denim. McCartney examined the frames with a magnifying glass and chose the one used for the cover of "Abbey Road." The white Volkswagen Beetle parked at the left belonged to a resident of the flats opposite the studio. Its license plate, LMW 281F, was repeatedly stolen after the album was released in Britain on September 26, 1969.

I visited that spot, it's not too far from me. The amount of folk re-enacting that shot and holding up the traffic is funny! The outside low walls of the studios are smothered in fans' graffiti

I also visited Primrose Hill where the Rolling Stones did a photoshoot for their "Between The Buttons" album. I've seen their once-awful Edith Grove flat in Chelsea and Brian Jones' grave in Cheltenham.

They should just put a white VW bug there permanently.

I don't get how a white VW bug represents the 'Paul is dead' theory. Anyone?

There is an ancient Himalayan myth, 1,000's of years old, in which Death is represented by a white VW bug.

You can actually see people crossing Abbey Road in real time.

http://www.abbeyroad.com/crossing

They even have an archive of people recreating the Beatles walk across at various times during the year.

The license plate reads 28IF as in Paul would be 28 if he was alive when this photo was taken or so I have read

Actually, and most people don't know this, but Paul was wearing shoes.

They were painted to look like bare feet.
