Hurricane Gustav 2008: Louisiana and Mississippi Landfall Pictures
Hurricane Gustav made its final landfall near Cocodrie, Louisiana, on September 1, 2008, as a Category 2 hurricane. It had crossed Jamaica on August 28 and 29 as a tropical storm, causing 15 direct deaths there, before strengthening to Category 4 intensity over western Cuba. Storm surge reached 12 to 13 feet in the Mississippi Delta southeast of New Orleans. Levees and floodwalls were overtopped in a few parts of metropolitan New Orleans, but the region did not suffer widespread inundation. Floodwaters covered rail yards and seafront roads, waves struck seawalls and Ken Combs Pier in Gulfport, Mississippi, and boats were left aground amid debris. Gustav caused 112 direct deaths across the Caribbean and the United States, including 77 in Haiti and seven in Louisiana. Another 41 deaths in Louisiana were attributed indirectly to the storm. U.S. damage was later estimated at $4.618 billion.
