Hilary Berseth's Programmed Hive: Honeycomb Sculptures, Pennsylvania, 2008
US artist Hilary Berseth created the Programmed Hive series in Pennsylvania around 2008 by placing prepared armatures inside closed hive boxes and introducing honeybee colonies. The bees built comb over structures made from materials including wire, wood, polystyrene foam and wax foundation, filling the resulting forms with honey. The colonies were later returned to the beekeeper, and the completed comb sculptures were displayed on hive supers. Programmed Hive #6, #7 and #8 were exhibited in New York in 2008. The works included a swirling cone and a cube. The photographs show hive boxes in a field, a beekeeper introducing bees, a swirl-patterned wooden board, a frame covered with bees, a pale spiralling wax-foundation form and a finished ribbed honeycomb dome mounted above a hive box. |
