A Man, A Gift, A Dream, The Mystery Of Coral Castle....

It is amazing - some even say miraculous - because it was quarried, fashioned, transported, and constructed by one man: Edward Leedskalnin, a 5-ft. tall, 100-lb.





Many men have single-handedly built their own homes, but Leedskalnin's choice of building materials is what makes his undertaking so incredible. He used huge blocks of coral rock, some weighing as much as 30 tons, and somehow was able to move them and set them in place without assistance or the use of modern machinery. And therein lies the mystery. How did he do it?

It's estimated that 1,000 tons of coral rock were used in construction of the walls and towers, and an additional 100 tons of it were carved into furniture and art objects:

An obelisk he raised weighs 28 tons.
The wall surrounding Coral Castle stands 8 ft. tall and consists of large blocks each weighing several tons.
Large stone crescents are perched atop 20-ft.-high walls.
A 9-ton swinging gate that moves at the touch of a finger guards the eastern wall.
The largest rock on the property weighs an estimated 35 tons.
Some stones are twice the weight of the largest blocks in the Great Pyramid at Giza.
Working alone, Leedskalnin labored for 20 years - from 1920 to 1940 - to build the home he originally called "Rock Gate Park" in Florida City. The story goes that he built it after being jilted by his fiancée, who changed her mind about marrying him because he was too old and too poor. After wandering around the U.S. and Canada for several years, Leedskalnin settled in Florida City for health reasons; he had been diagnosed with tuberculosis.

He began building his coral home in 1920. Then in 1936, when a planned new subdivision of homes threatened his privacy, Leedskalnin moved his entire home - and its many tons of coral - 10 miles to Homestead, where he completed it, and where it still stands as a tourist attraction.

How Leedskalnin managed this feat of engineering has remained a mystery all these years because, incredibly, no one saw him do it. A secretive man, Leedskalnin often worked at night by lantern light. And so there are no credible witnesses to how the small, frail man was able to move the huge blocks of rock. Even when he moved the entire structure to Homestead, neighbors saw the coral blocks being transported on a borrowed truck, but no one seems to know how Leedskalnin got them on and off the vehicle.

Lots of weird stories have been told and bizarre theories proposed to explain Coral Castle. And since no witness can dispute any of them, they are all worthy of consideration.

One story says that some curious neighbors did see how Leedskalnin moved the stones. They say he placed his hands on the stone to be lifted... and sang. Somehow this levitated the great rocks. According to an article in FATE magazine, "some teenagers spying on him one evening claimed they saw him 'float coral blocks through the air like hydrogen balloons,' but no one took them seriously."


Frank Joseph, in the FATE magazine article, also writes, "Alternative science investigators suggest that Leedskalnin somehow learned the secret of the 'world grid,' an invisible pattern of energy lines surrounding the Earth which concentrates points of telluric power where they intersect. It was here, at one of these intersections of Earth energy, that he was supposedly able to move his prodigious stone blocks using the unseen power of our planet." Yet that still does not explain how Leedskalnin was able to tap this power, and others cannot.
J. Cathie, a captain flying with National Airways Corp. of New Zealand, said, "Measurements from the Coral Castle position to the zero-degree and 90-degree longitude lines, when they passed through the equator, also yielded harmonics related to light and gravity. The final check of the distance between Coral Castle and grid pole A in the north, dispelled any doubt about the site being in an ideal position to allow Leedskalnin to erect the huge blocks of coral with relative ease. Measurements from all major points gave the geometric harmonics necessary for the manipulation of anti-gravity." Cathie also believes that this energy grid is also responsible for many UFO sightings.


In an article titled "The Coral Castle Mystery" in Atlantis Rising, author Christopher Dunn asserts: "What if there's no such thing as gravity? And the natural forces we already know about are sufficient to explain the noted phenomena we have labeled as gravity? Perhaps Leedskalnin's means of working with the Earth's gravitational pull was nothing more complicated than devising a means by which the alignment of magnetic elements within his coral blocks was adjusted to face the streams of individual magnets he claims are issuing forth from the Earth with a like repelling pole."
When he was personally asked how he managed the feat, Leedskalnin replied only that he understood the laws of weight and leverage. He is quoted as saying, "I have discovered the secrets of the pyramids. I have found out how the Egyptians and the ancient builders in Peru, Yucatan, and Asia, with only primitive tools, raised and set in place blocks of stone weighing many tons."

According the "The Enigma of Coral Castle," "Ed flatly disagreed with modern science, and claimed that the scientists were wrong, and 'that nature is simple.' He believed all matter consisted of individual magnets, and it is the movement of these magnets within materials, and through space, that produce measurable phenomena, magnetism, and electricity. These concepts 'involved the relationship of the Earth to celestial alignments.' He claimed to see beads of light, which he believed to be the physical presence of nature's magnetism and life force, or what we term today, chi."

Was Leedskalnin being deceptive when he talked about magnetism and electricity, trying to make his accomplishment more mystical and mysterious than it actually was? Had he merely found a very clever way to manipulate the great stones with levers and pulleys? We may never know the answer. Leedskalnin took his secrets with him to his grave in 1951... secrets that await to be rediscovered.

One of the places I have listed on my Bucket List is Coral Castle. This is a place that is so awesome and inspiring, everyone should visit. It truly is a wonder, and it’s the only “modern” day megalithic site. Built by Edward Leedskalnin, a very tiny guy, ALL BY HIMSLEF!

There are even more secrets that are revealed about how Ed built this Castle! Absolutely amazing!

Edward was only 100 pounds at most, and barely stood over 5 feet, yet he somehow, all alone, managed to build this fascinating and remarkable “Stone Garden” for the woman, Agnes Scuffs, he fell in love with. So romantic. But Agnes told him she would not marry him the night before their wedding, for he was too old and poor. (He was 10 years older than her). It took him 28 years to complete, built from 1923 to 1951. Originally it was called “Rock Gate Park”, but later renamed. The garden has over 1,100 tons of coral rock (which is really limestone). Edward sculpted and carved each one to the shape he desired. The Castle consists of a two-story castle tower, walls, sundial (accurate too), telescope, obelisk, barbecue, furniture, water well, fountain, celestial planets and stars. Oh, and his magnet generator. The over 8 ton revolving gate is really unique, such that one can open the door with just a push of a finger. Truly incredible! The first garden Ed carved was located in Florida City, Florida. But once a subdivision was going in next door, he decided to MOVE THE ENTIRE GARDEN, to Homestead, Florida, 10 miles away. He was a very private man. Private indeed.



Now what is absolutely amazing about Ed’s stone garden is that he did this all by himself. He worked at night only by lantern, and no one was allowed to watch him. There are very few pictures that were ever caught during the construction. He was adamant that no one could watch him. And it seemed that Ed somehow knew when someone was trying to spy on him. Curious, huh?

Ed had a friend that with a tractor that would haul the load from Florida City to Homestead. And many could see the coral rocks being moved on the highway. But no one ever saw Ed actually load or unload the trailer himself. How funny. How could he have moved tons and tons of coral rock all by himself?

In 1940, Ed finished his garden and then erected the walls and gates. The coral was approximately 125 lbs. per cubic foot. Each section of the wall is 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide, and 3 feet thick, and weighs 13,000 pounds. Now, I don’t know about you, but I would love a man who could build me a rock garden like this one! He definitely had some special knowledge on how to move these gigantic rocks by himself. What could that knowledge have been and who showed it to him?



Ed became sick in December of 1951, and put a sign on his door reading “Going to the Hospital” and died three days later at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He was 64 years old. His nephew inherited the Castle. Just before his death, he sold the Castle to a family in Chicago. A box was found among Ed’s belongings. A set of instructions were found in the box which led to 35 $100 bills ($35,000), which was his life savings. All this from a man who only finished 4th grade. Very interesting man indeed.

Ed was asked many times how he built the Castle. He would tell them that he discovered the secrets of Stonehenge and the Egyptians and how they built the pyramids. That’s all he would say. But he must have something up his sleeve, for he built this magnificent Castle that baffles scientists and engineers even today. How DID he do it?

I am curious if Ed ever travelled to Egypt in the first place. How would he discover the Egyptians secrets if he never went there? Did he discover some secret in a book or something else? Whatever he discovered, he took it with him to the grave.


Another thought I have is maybe Ed wasn’t human. I know, it’s a long shot. But arguments can be made for this very thought. He was very, very private. Very reclusive and never wanted people watching him. So it seems to beg the question as to whether he was secretly an alien living among us. There are claims of some teenagers that spied on him once and saw Ed lay his hands over a block and “it would float through the air like hydrogen balloons.” Other theories have been offered up as well. There seems to be a few pictures of Ed (supposedly) at work using his tripod (see photos above). But, looking closely at the pictures, there seems to be more than one tripod. They are different. And you can’t even tell if it’s really Ed in the picture. Not only that, but the tripod Ed used was only about 20 feet high, and some of the blocks are 25 feet high and vertical. Doubts also persist about whether the tripod (made of old telephone poles) could support the larger stones, which weighed up to 35 tons. And surely a 100 lb. man could not lift the stones himself. And even if he did, okay, once he has it lifted, then what? How does he move the tripod and the stone to somewhere else? And if you look at the pictures, how did he get the chains and/or rope wrapped around the block to be lifted? He would have to lift the block up to wrap the chains around, right? I think he must have used some magic. Alien magic – what else could it be?

And why has no one else discovered his secret to building Coral Castle? If this 4th grade level immigrant (he was born in Riga,Latvia) can figure out how to build a megalithic site, then why can’t anyone else figure it out? It must be something quite simple, right? Maybe he figured out some kind of magnetic manipulation of some kind. He did write 3 pamphlets on the subject of “Magnetic Current”. Ed believed that everything in the Universe was made of magnets. All you had to do was align the magnets up along the Earth Energy Grid and you had the secret. Really? Is that all there is to it? But the pamphlet must not have contained any clues, for it is available for sale to the public.

So how did Ed do this feat? A few pictures might give a clue. He used a large tripod with a box at the top. (you can see the box in the pictures above) No one has ever seen what is inside the box that sat on the top of this tripod pulley system Ed built. It did have chains and pulleys, but that’s it. One man couldn’t have moved the tons of coral rock with this alone, by himself. No way. And many engineers have stated that his tripod couldn’t have supported the weight of the large stones. But the box has disappeared. Where did it go? And who has it?

What was in the box? Some say that radio frequency was used by Ed, kind of like acoustic levitation. We know now that certain frequencies of sound can levitate objects. But could this little box have been able to levitate huge coral rocks weighing tons? That is the question, isn’t it.

And what about the unknown origin of the stone they found under the door? This is more evidence that maybe Ed wasn’t human, or from this world. Where did he get it and did it help him built the Castle in some way? We will never know. Sad.

The fascination of this construction and how Ed accomplished such a job, makes me want to go out and experiment myself. Ed often told people that if he could learn the secrets of the Egyptians and Stonehenge then anyone could. So is he right? Could the answer be right under our noses and we just don’t see it?

I think Ed was a cool guy, for building for nearly 30 years, just for the woman he loved. He was truly inspiring, and he left us a wondrous Castle to marvel at and walk around in. The Castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 (under Rock Gate Park). Agnes never saw the Castle dedicated to her.

I guess he did it his way-for eternity!
