Being California, this is most likely a rehabilitated sea-lion pup that probably would have been cared for at the facility near Fort Barry just north of the Golden Gate bridge, and released nearby once it was strong enough. Even though steps are taken to prevent imprinting/desensitisation to people, sea-lions are intelligent and easily associate being handled by people with free food (and being jabbed with needles for blood taking, always a fun undertaking especially with sub-adult animals). I worked at the facility for a couple months; great times catching and restraining sea-lions and elephant seals. Got to remove a damaged eye from one elephant seal pup, and was doing EEGs on them to detect seizure activity in them as a result of toxic red algal blooms. |
