Goalkeeper CIWS 30mm GAU-8/A Live-Fire Trial at Sea
Goalkeeper is a Dutch shipboard close-in weapon system developed by Signaal, now Thales Nederland, to defend warships against missiles and other nearby threats. Development began in 1975, a prototype was demonstrated in 1979, and the system entered service around 1980. The system combines its own search and tracking radars with a 30mm GAU-8/A Avenger seven-barrel rotary cannon, the same gun used by the A-10 aircraft. It is fully automatic and fires at 4,200 rounds per minute, or 70 rounds per second. A typical engagement burst lasts about 0.2 seconds. During the shipboard live-fire trial, the mount slews and fires over the open sea. The trial ends with a target exploding close to the water, followed by a high-speed replay of the blast and debris. |
