Giant Congo Snake
The picture was taken in 1959 by a Belgium helicopter pilot, Col. Remy Van Lierde, while on patrol over the congo. The snake he saw measured approximately 40 to 50 feet in length, dark brown/green with a white belly. It had triangle shaped jaws and a head about 3 ft x 2 ft. Experts have analyzed the pictures and have verified them as authentic. They also have verified the size of the creature by matching ground features to the snake. As the helicopter flew in lower the snake raised up 10 feet and looked as if it would strike at the helicopter if they flew any closer.

Re: Giant Congo Snake
The 2 largest snakes known in Africa are the rock python (20 feet) and the king cobra (18 feet, huge for a venomous snake!). Since those who saw the snake saw it rise into a striking position, but did not report seeing a cobra's hood, I have to think the snake was a python. Pythons are constrictor snakes, not venomous, and often kept as pets. They report the snake being around 50 feet long, which is much larger than any snake known. The largest snake on record, a reticulated python from Southeast Asia, there was one measured at 33 feet. Another extremely long snake is the South American Anaconda, which is about the same size. So, I wouldn't expect quite such a long snake in Africa, but you never know. In 2003, Indonesian villagers claimed to have a 49-foot reticulated python in their zoo. It turned out to be a mere 21 feet, still a really large snake. My guess is that the length of the Congo snake was overestimat |

Re: Giant Congo Snake
JAKARTA, Indonesia - Indonesian villagers claim to have captured a python that is almost 49 feet long and weighs nearly 990 pounds, a local official said. If confirmed, it would be the largest snake ever kept in captivity. |
