Giant 40,000 Year Old Wolf Head
An enormous decapitated wolf head has been found in Siberia. The head is thought to have been frozen about 40,000 years ago and unearthed due to changing climatic conditions. Measuring 40 cms in length, the head was discovered by a local man walking along the edge of the Tirekhtyakh River in the Russian Republic of Sakha (aka Yakutia). "This is a unique discovery of the first-ever remains of a fully grown Pleistocene wolf with its tissue preserved," Palaeontology Albert Protopopov from the Republic of Sakha Academy of Sciences told The Siberian Times. Interesting find. The skull was measured at 40 cm, which is 10cm longer than a modern wolf's skull according to the link in the op.

This is a bear. Either a Grizzly Bear or a dirty Polar Bear. Believe me, I have to kick a path through slouchy Grizzly Bears every time I take out my garbage here. |

I think "Dire Wolves" were much larger. I saw the skeletons of a few at the LaBrea Tarpits in Los Angeles, and they were HUGE! I think they were about twice the size of a modern wolf. It was scary to think these things were running around with humans. Also, I remember them as having saber-teeth as well. I wondered why they would have gone extinct? I think only Grizzlies would have been above them on the food chain.
