The Stasi (East German Secret Police) actually excavated part of the Bunker in the 1970's to check for any form of escape routes that people might use to get to Western Europe. They took pictures while they were down there, I just wish I could find them, since 30-odd years had passed, the place was obviously beginning to decay....

Such a waste of history. Soviets destroyed so much. Unfortunately nowadays there is hardly anything architecturally worth saving with modern construction. Sure the buildings look cool and modern with all the glass but they are entirely replaceable and easily duplicated. Same thing with most wood stick frame homes.
