The Forgotten Island Of New York~350 Yards from the Bronx
North Brother Island Located in the East River between Queens and the Bronx, NYC is a 13 acre island on which stands an abandoned 19th century hospital as well as houses once lived in by the caregivers. The Riverside Hospital, founded in the 1850's to treat and isolate victims and carriers of contagious illnesses, remains almost as it was left when the City of New York forced it's closure in 1962. North Brother's gaslight-lined streets, brownstone hospital buildings, crumbling doctors' houses, and sandy beaches are littered with cookware and heavy glass tonic bottles. The island is a great repository for artifacts from 19th century New York, seemingly undisturbed by humans or the passing of time on the mainland just a canoe ride away. This island hospital was home to Typhoid Mary on two seperate occasions, once in 1910 and again in 1915 where she remained until her death in 1938 at the age of 69. North Brother Island is now a bird sanctuary, abandoned and restricted to public access. Most of the original hospitals' buildings remain standing in a deteriorated state and in danger of collapse. A dense forest cloaks the ruined hospital buildings with secrecy and the restrictions to public access sadly prevent an undeniably authentic setting for a block buster horror movie. Enjoy the Pictures![4] |

That is awesome! Stepping foot on that island would be like taking a trip in a time machine. Gaslight-lined streets? Creepy, old abandoned buildings? Abundant historical context? You can count me in. |

Very cool post! I love stuff like this. When you see it, you get to step into the past. I just wish I had a camera that fit into my pocket when I did this before life got in the way. A little more on the island. North Brother Island If you like exploring here's a great site. http://www.uer.ca/forum |
