Flag Raising on Iwo Jima Photograph (February 1945)
In this photograph of the raising of the flag on top of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima catapulted patriotism in the United States. The photo taken by Joe Rosenthal depicts 6 soldiers raising the flag after capturing Iwo Jima. The soldiers that raised the flag, three of them, Franklin Sousley, Harlon Block and Michael Strank did not survive. The three surviving soldiers were John Bradley, Rene Gagnon, and Ira Hayes were instantly famous. History says that this was not the first flag that was risen above Mount Suribachi. It was actually the second flag raising. Joe Rosenthal was there to capture the photo on February 19, 1945. The photo was so inspiring that the USMC War Memorial in Washington D.C. The raising of the flag has also inspired a major motion picture titled Flags of our Fathers based on the novel by James Bradley of the same title.
