Elwha River Dam Removal

This video, posted by YouTube user Jakob Marklew, gives an overview of the Elwha River dam removal that includes interviews with Robert Elofson, the river restoration director, construction workers, and Larry Ward, a hatchery manager, who works with the tribes to restore salmon populations to the river.

“This is the home of my tribe, we are the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe and our home is at the mouth of the river, so we couldn’t be happier that these dams are going to disappear,” Elofson says in the video. The second dam he is referring to is the Glines Canyon dam, which has already been demolished.

The end of the dam means the restoration of threatened salmon populations and the restoration of sacred sites flooded decades ago.
