Elephant Herd Saves Calf from Nile Crocodile in Kruger National Park, 2010
A Nile crocodile seized a baby African bush elephant by the trunk during a stream crossing in Kruger National Park, South Africa, in October 2010. The other elephants rallied around the calf, and the crocodile released its grip and disappeared.

Johan Opperman's photo sequence shows the herd and its calves wading single-file through a stream covered with floating plants. The calf is then seen bracing itself as the crocodile grips the tip of its trunk near the red mud bank. Later photographs show the herd bunched around the calves at the water's edge before moving up the bank.

Fantastic shots Dman! Too bad pachyderms are vegan, or they would have had a feast on that beast!
