  Stubby, the mixed terrier, was one of the more famous dogs of World War I.  circa 1944: Butch O'Brien, a spaniel mascot of the US Navy on board his ship in the sea of Japan.  24th April 1944: "Coupie" a canine mascot of a squadron in the Allie Expeditionary Air Force visits each aircraft and pilot before take-off. Never Forget.     Not exactly "dogs of war", however, a lot of the dogs used at the WTC site did come from several tactical departments around the US and Canada. 250 dogs were used and 5 died during the search. I've heard stories that so many bodies were found by the dogs that handlers had to bury themselves and get found to allow the dogs to find at least one person alive. (Dogs have similar morale to humans.) A grim task indeed.. anyone who dislikes dogs will never truly appreciate the service these magnificent animals do for mankind.

Awesome post. Many people don't consider dogs as 'soldiers', but they do so much good, they shouldn't be overlooked for their heroism. Thanks for this good info and post.  |
