It's purpose was to create us to observe it to make it exist. This seems slightly illogical and self-perpetuating if you follow the simple rules of cause and effect, but they are simple rules created by man in an attempt to define the nature of reality. The universe does not have to follow these rules also, it can do what it jolly well likes - the rapid and spontaneous expansion into nothingness being a good example.
